BAREILLY: The state government has shifted gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad to Naini (Prayagraj) central jail on health grounds. The government had taken prior permission from the Election Commission for the transfer after Ahmad’s wife requested the state government to shift him to Naini prison.
District jail superintendent, UP Mishra, said that after receiving orders from EC and the state government, they sent Ahmad to Naini prison in high security on Friday night.

Ahmad’s lawyer, Nisar Ahmad, told TOI, “We have requested the government to shift my client to Naini prison since he is diabetic and it had been very difficult to take him to Allahabad high court and Lucknow court on hearings from Bareilly prison. We are thankful to the government as well as EC for paying heed to hour request.”

Advocate Ahmad said that Atiq Ahmad’s shifting to Naini jail would help in preparing strategy for contesting election on Phulpur or Fatehpur Lok Sabha seat.

Atiq may contest election himself or he would field his wife, as his advocate has hinted while divulging his poll strategy. the mafia-turned-MP has ‘dominance’ on couple of Lok Sabha constituencies of Eastern UP. According to political pundits, if he contests election, he will definitely make dent in SP-BSP alliance and Congress votes.

Meanwhile, on April 11, an advocate Ashwini Upadhyay had filed PIL in Supreme Court pleading life ban on politicians convicted in criminal cases. SC bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi will consider the PIL on April 23.

Atiq was shifted to Bareilly from Deoria on January 1 after abduction of Lucknow-based businessman Mohit Jaiswal into Deoria prison by his goons where he allegedly manhandled him along with his son Umar.

The UP government has stated in its report filed in SC that CCTVs of the jail complex were not working at the relevant time and the jail manual was not followed at the time when Jaiswal was kidnapped into Deoria jail.

In that matter, an inquiry was initiated against four officials including jail superintendent. Three security guards were suspended. However, any arrest is yet to be made.

As many as 109 criminal cases have been registered against Atiq Ahmad from 1979 to 2019. Of 109 cases, 17 are of murder cases.
