ALLAHABAD: An inspector, posted with the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) in Varanasi, committed suicide by jumping off the New Yamuna Bridge late on Friday night.
According to station officer, Kydganj, Anjani Kumar Srivastava, the deceased identified as Satish Chandra Shukla, whose family lived in the Madhwapur area of Baihrana locality, was to retire in January next year.
“After getting the information, we reached the spot and launched a search to recover his body with the help of divers,” said the officer. On Saturday morning, the divers managed to fish out his body. He is survived by his wife Mamta and two sons Prananjay and Saujanya.
Shukla has written several books and was honoured by the governor in 2015. Although the reason for taking the extreme step by him is not confirmed, it is believed that he was unhappy with his posting. “The family members told us that he was on medical leave and was under depression,” said Srivastava.
