A two-member Madurai High Court Bench-appointed team inspected the Kodagan Channel near here following a case filed in the Court accusing the officials of discharging untreated underground drainage water into the channel.
Former panchayat president of Ramaiyanpatti Kaatturaja filed a case in the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court praying for a direction to Tirunelveli Corporation officials to stop the discharge of underground drainage water into Kodagan Channel without treating it properly.
The petitioner said the sewage water being pumped from Tirunelveli and Palayamkottai areas to Ramaiyanpatti sewage treatment plant through the underground drainage scheme, was being discharged into the Kodagan Channel without being treated properly.
As the Corporation, in its reply, averred that the urban civic body was properly treating the sewage in the treatment plant, the Madurai Bench appointed Advocate Commissioners K. Jeeva Sundari and T. Joshua to inspect the spot and submit the report.
As the team visited the spot on Saturday, petitioner Mr. Kaatturaja, City Engineer, Tirunelveli Corporation V. Narayanan Nair and City Health Officer Satish Kumar accompanied the team.
Additional Government Pleader A. K. Selvakumar, who hails from Palayamkottai, accompanied the team and explained to the team members about the Tamirabharani irrigation system and the major irrigation channels under this system, including the Kodagan channel.
Based on the report to be filed by the team, the Court will decide on the merit of the case and pass orders.
