Samsung Galaxy Fold early models facing display issues, company looking into the matter

“Samsung Galaxy Fold issues reportedly involve screen flickering and broken hinge”

Samsung Galaxy Fold, which is the brand’s first commercial foldable smartphone, is set to release in the US later this month. But even before the release, the phone seems to be earning a bad reputation as a handful of reporters, who have received the review units are revealing serious display issues. These issues include a defective hinge, causing small bulge resulting in distortion in the screen.

Some of the display issues, as per Samsung, were caused by the removal of the on-screen film by the reviewers. The reviewers assumed that it was a regular plastic film applied but the brand says that the film is crucial to the display’s protection. This led Samsung to reiterate that this layer shouldn’t be removed under any circumstances and that adhesives of any kind shouldn’t be used on the top layer either. Interestingly, CNBC also reports that the left side of the screen flickers consistently even when the protector film isn’t removed or touched.

Samsung claims that the Galaxy Fold can hold up well for about 200,000 folds and said that it performed rigorous tests on the Galaxy Fold’s display. However, in reality, though, it doesn’t seem to hold up well, which is a shame considering the premium $1980 price tag. These issues might create concern among users ahead of the April 26th launch and question the phone’s durability. We hope Samsung clears out the hurdles in time before this turns into another Note 7 fiasco.

Addressing the issue, Samsung in a statement said, “A limited number of early Galaxy Fold samples were provided to media for review. We have received a few reports regarding the main display on the samples provided. We will thoroughly inspect these units in person to determine the cause of the matter.

Separately, a few reviewers reported having removed the top layer of the display causing damage to the screen. The main display on the Galaxy Fold features a top protective layer, which is part of the display structure designed to protect the screen from unintended scratches. Removing the protective layer or adding adhesives to the main display may cause damage. We will ensure this information is clearly delivered to our customers.”

We will update you as this story develops, so stay tuned in.
