NEW DELHI: A man threw a shoe at BJP spokesperson G V L Narasimha Rao at a press conference at the party headquarters here on Thursday when Rao started speaking about Sadhvi Pragya’s candidature from
Bhopal.
The shoe thrown allegedly by Kanpur doctor Shakti Bhargava missed its target, instead hitting the microphone and flying past Rao. Bhargava has been detained.
Just before the attack, Rao was lashing out at the opposition for questioning Pragya’s candidature; she is contesting against former chief minister
Digvijaya Singh. “The Congress and inspired parties like
Samajwadi Party and National Conference… what problem do you have with Sadhvi being fielded as a BJP candidate? In the 10 years (since the 2008
Malegaon attack), the Congress has defamed Hindu society at the altar of vote-bank politics, mastered by
Rahul Gandhi,” Rao said.
At this point Bhargava allegedly hurled the shoe, missing but leaving the leader stunned. Rao, when he regained his composure, blamed the attack on Congress while Bhargava was removed from the hall by security guards and BJP workers.
A joint team of the
Delhi Police and IB is interrogating the man , police said.
