Armed police personnel from Andhra Pradesh have been deployed for the second phase of polling to be held on Friday, in Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
The forces have been sent in advance and the A.P. Police are coordinating with their counterparts of the neighbouring States for peaceful conduct of the elections, said Director-General of Police (DGP) R.P. Thakur.
As there are many extremist affected and cut-off villages on Andhra Odisha Border (AOB), and Chhattisgarh, combing has been intensified on the State borders, the DGP said.
“We conducted border meetings with the DGPs, Intelligence chiefs and the officers who are monitoring anti-naxal operations and decided to conduct joint operations. Police bound over hardcore Maoist sympathisers, militia members and suspects in Naxal-dominated villages,” Mr. Thakur told The Hindu on Wednesday.
Police kept a surveillance on Maoist affiliated groups and shared the intelligence sources with the officers of other States. Photographs of the action team members of the Maoists have been circulated in all Left Wing Extremist (LWE) affected areas and an alert has been sounded in this regard, the DGP said.
Additional DGP (Law and Order) A. Ravi Shankar said 17 companies of armed forces had been sent to the neighbouring States for poll duty.
4.105 booked
As regards violence in during elections in the State, Dr. Shankar said 372 cases were booked for poll-related violence on April 11, and 129 cases were registered for post-poll violence.
“In all, 4,105 persons who indulged in violence were booked across the State, of which 50% were arrested. One SI was injured in violence on poll day,” the Addl. DG said.
“We are verifying the CCTV footages at the booths and are identifying trouble mongers. Cases were registered in almost all the districts,” Dr. Shankar said.
Cases have been registered on charges of rioting, violation of Model Code of Conduct (MCC) and other IPC sections.
In wake of the Maoists violence in Chhattisgarh and other States, Naxal targets were alerted and security stepped up for them, particularly on the State borders, the Addl. DG added.
