CHANDIGARH: Nikita, a dog bite victim at PU is still in shock while recalling her ordeal. "I was going to my hostel after my classes and suddenly I saw a fully grown stray dog staring angrily and growling at me and before I could do anything, it bit me twice on my legs. I screamed and some passersby came to my help and shoo the dog away. Blood started oozing from my leg," she said on Tuesday evening.

Later, the same dog attacked three more girls near Laxmi Bai Hostel in PU, instilling a sense of fear among other hostellers and passersby.

When the victims were contacted, it came to light that there was a group of dogs, which lived right in front of the hostel despite multiple complaints to the PU VC and dean, department of social welfare. The victims said, "We are in fear to even step out of the hostel when we see a dog standing right in front of the hostel. No action has been taken by the administration despite many complaints."

Team TOI also found that for the past six months, a total of 10 girls had been bitten by stray dogs living in Laxmi Bai Hostel. The victims are Sukhwinder Kaur, Harpreet Kaur, Monika, Harmeen Kaur, Kuldeep Singh, Mandeep Kaur, Amandeep Kaur, Suman and Lovepreet.

Not only the girls hostel, the issue of stray dogs attacking other persons grips entire PU and there seems to be no solution to it. Another student Sahil Mor of environment department, who was going to his home and reached near gate number 3 when a stray dog bit his leg, had to run for his life despite being injured. Sahil while sharing his story said, "It was a horrific experience for me and I could not even think of walking on the campus alone now. The administration should do something to solve the stray dog issue on the PU campus."

Dean, department of social welfare, Emanual Nahar said, "Considering the serious issue and multiple complaints coming to us, I have written to the municipal corporation, but they are doing nothing on the issue. It is an issue of concern for our students. I am taking a meeting with the security officer and will appoint one security guard each at the place where stray dogs are living in large numbers till the time MC officials take some action."
