Lok Sabha elections and bypolls: 384 EVMs, 692 VVPATs replaced in Tamil Nadu

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu has recorded nearly 40% polling till 1pm since the polling began at 7am. Serpentine queues were seen at all polling booths in the state till 11am when people rushed to cast their votes and beat the heat. But after 11am, the polling rate came down.
There were complaints of EVMs and VVPATs malfunctioning. “We have changed 384 EVMs and 692 VVPATs. The polling has been peaceful so far and after initial hitches it is going on smoothly," said chief electoral officer Satyabrata Sahoo.
Among the Lok Sabha constituencies, Namakkal recorded the maximum polling of 41.56% and Chennai Central recorded the minimum of 36.09%.
Three Chennai constituencies recorded moderate polling with South Chennai recording 37.96% and North Chennai 37.23%.
The 18 assembly constituencies in the state where byelections are happening recorded 42.92% polling till 1pm with Ambur recording the maximum of 50.74% and Periyakulam recording the lowest of 32.39%.
