Rivian Promotes The Adventurous Spirit Of The R1S And R1T In New York

Electric car startup Rivian has brought along both the R1S SUV and R1T pickup truck to the New York Auto Show.

Eager to show the world that its EVs are unlike the dozens of others that were unveiled in recent months, particularly in China, Rivian is highlighting the adventurous character of its vehicles.

In the built-up to the New York show, Rivian published a series of images of the R1S SUV focused on how well-suited it will be for long journeys. At the show, the R1S car has a pair of bright yellow kayaks fitted to its roof – and while the R1S and R1T are quite some way off before hitting the market, they certainly look the part.

Both the R1S and R1T will be sold in a number of different configurations. The SUV, for example, will be sold in entry-level guise with a 105 kWh battery pack powering four electric motors that put out 402 hp and 412 lb-ft (560 Nm) of torque. A mid-range R1S will feature a larger, 135 kWh battery pack and a combined 753 hp and 825 lb-ft (1120 Nm), and the range-topping version will have a huge 180 kWh battery pack and is rated at 700 hp and 825 lb-ft (1120 Nm) of torque. Ranges of these models will sit at approximately 240 miles (386 km), 310 miles (498 km), and 410+ miles (659 km) respectively.

The Rivian R1T pickup will likely be offered in the same configurations and, according to a number of recent patents, could be available with numerous modular box systems for the bed.
