Woman detained at police station

A habeas corpus petition seeking production of a businesswoman, T. Soundarya Sravanthi, was filed in the Telangana High Court on Wednesday alleging that LB Nagar police of Rachakonda commissionerate detained her illegally.

Sravanthi’s friend Shashi Roshan filed the petition, which is likely to be heard at the HC on Thursday. The petitioner stated that a team of LB Nagar policemen descended at her house at Hasthinapuram Colony in the early hours of Tuesday and searched it.

Not disclosing the reasons behind the searches, police continued the searches, the petitioner stated. Sravanthi was not at home then. On learning about it, she rang up the LB Nagar police and was told to come to the police station to know the reasons.

The petitioner maintained that she and Ms. Sravanthi went to the police station around 4 p.m. on Tuesday. Since then, police illegally detained Sravanthi in the police station without informing the grounds for her detention and the nature of complaint against her, the petitioner said.

According to the petitioner, she went to the police station again in the early hours of Wednesday but was not allowed even to speak with Ms. Sravanthi. All that the police told her was that there was a complaint from a former Home Minister’s family against the woman. They wanted her husband to come to the police station in the matter, the petitioner said. The petitioner’s counsel V. Raghunath said that Ms. Sravanthi’s detention was a violation of Article 21 of the Constitution.

“We would request the court to record her statement and direct LB Nagar police to initiate criminal action based on that,” he said.
