Major delays on Sydney train lines following police operation

Major delays across Sydney's train network were expected on Thursday afternoon after an alleged trespasser forced police to shut down Redfern Station.

Overhead power at the station was also shut off during the police operation just before 11am on Thursday, a Transport Management Centre spokesman said.

The disruption meant no trains were able to stop at Redfern, affecting all train lines except the Southern Highlands line.

While police had a person in custody and services were restored by about 11.40am, the TMC spokesman said delays would continue through Thursday afternoon.

Major delays will continue to affect the T1 North Shore, Northern and Western Line, T2 Inner West and Leppington Line, T3 Bankstown Line, T4 Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra Line, T8 Airport and South Line, Blue Mountains, Central Coast and Newcastle, and South Coast lines.

At 1pm some trains were more than an hour late, while other services were experiencing delays of 10-30 minutes.

Passengers were advised to delay travel or seek alternative transport arrangements.

A police spokesman said the incident was believed to be self-harm related.
