Mumbai: Soon, two more foot over bridges (FOBs) on suburban stations will be shut—one at Andheri and the other at Grant Road—in view of the need for urgent repairs.

Steps have been taken to shut and repair FOBs for passenger safety in the aftermath of the Himalaya FOB collapse at CSMT in March. At least a dozen bridges across stations on Central and Western Railway have been shut for either repairs or reconstruction.

WR chief spokesperson Ravinder Bhakar said, “The old existing east span with the south-side staircase of the Andheri (middle) FOB will be closed from the midnight of April 23 to facilitate construction of a new staircase. Commuters may use the existing staircase of the station building for the east side in lieu of this staircase.”

He further said, “Similarly, the north FOB at Grant Road station will be closed between platforms two and three and 4 from the midnight of April 20 for repair work. During this period, commuters may use a portion of this FOB between platforms one and two and the south foot over bridge.” He added that the WR regretted the inconvenience caused to scores of commuters due to closure of the two FOBs.

The railways have so far shut FOBs at Vikhroli, Bhandup, Dombivli, Kurla, Vile Parle, Malad and Dadar stations. It will entirely rebuild the bridges at Vikhroli, Bhandup, Dombivli and Kurla, which is likely to take a minimum of six months, said sources. The remaining bridges will be repaired and sources indicated that this work could take up to four months.
