Many polling booths, especially in Tamil Nadu, saw brisk voting in the first hour. Congress leaders P Chidambaram and Sushil Kumar Shinde were among the earliest to turn up.

Polling underway in Karnataka's 14 LS seats

Voting is underway in the first phase of polling for Karnataka's 14 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state's central and southern regions amid tight security. The constituencies where polling is underway are Udupi-Chikmagalur, Hassan, Dakshina Kannada, Chitradurga (SC), Tumkur, Mandya, Mysore, Chamarajnagar (SC), Bangalore Rural, Bangalore North, Bangalore Central, Bangalore South, Chikkaballapur and Kolar (SC). After casting his vote, senior Congress leader P Chidambaram told reporters: "It is a good day. I have voted for a change of government at the centre and in Tamil Nadu." Brisk voting in Udhampur, yet to pick up in Srinagar

Small queues of voters were seen in Kathua, Reasi and Udhampur districts right from the beginning of the poll process for the Udhampur Lok Sabha seat. Voter enthusiasm was visible in both urban and rural voting segments, reports IANS. In Srinagar Lok Sabha seat where extra ordinary security arrangements have been made to secure polling stations and ensure safe passage to voters, voters came out in ones and twos in rural voting segments of Ganderbal, Badgam and Srinagar districts. Polling stations in Srinagar city that has eight voting segments, however, wore a deserted look in the morning. Long queues at some booths in West Bengal

Long to medium sized queues were seen before polling booths, as voting began at 7 a.m. for three northern West Bengal constituencies , reports IANS. Colourfully attired tea garden workers and their dependents were among those who turned out in strength in Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri constituencies, while Muslim community members were seen in good numbers at the prestigious Raiganj seat in the early hours.

All eyes on Tamil Nadu today, both fronts have big stakes here

Tamil Nadu, with 39 seats, is important for the Congress-DMK alliance as it pushes for numbers against the BJP which is in alliance here with AIADMK and some other parties. Also, crucially for the ruling AIADMK, there will be a sort of mini Assembly elections with the conduct of by-elections for 22 Assembly constituencies. In the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, the ruling AIADMK has 114 members (including the Speaker), the DMK 88, the Congress 8, and the IUML and Independents one each.

Polling will be held today for 95 seats apread across 11 states and the union territory of Puducherry. Polling will be held in 38 seats in Tamil Nadu, 14 seats in Karnataka, 10 in Maharashtra, eight in Uttar Pradesh, five each in Assam, Bihar and Odisha, three each in Chhattisgarh and West Bengal, two in Jammu and Kashmir and one seat each in Manipur and Puducherry. Elections will also be held in 35 assembly constituencies in Odisha.
