BENGALURU: A 21-year-old post-graduate student, who allegedly extorted Rs 6.4 lakh from a 17-year-old after tricking him and his Instagram girlfriend into sharing their nude photos, has landed in police net.
Vishwa, a resident of Varthur and MA student in Bangalore University, impersonated Instagram accounts of the teenagers to make a quick buck.
On Instagram, Vishwa came across the accounts of Rashmi and Brijesh (names changed), who were of the same age. He found out that Brijesh and Rashmi were liking and commenting on each others’ photos regularly. He impersonated Rashmi’s Instagram account first and began chatting with Brijesh. Feigning to be Rashmi, he managed to get Brijesh’s nude photos.
Vishwa then impersonated Brijesh’s account and used it to get nude pictures from Rashmi. Brijesh and Rashmi, all the while, had no clue about the third person and assumed that they were chatting with each other. In December, Vishwa contacted Brijesh from another fake account and threatened to share his photos online if Rs 10 lakh was not paid.
In January, the teen started stealing money and valuables from his house to give to Vishwa. In the first instalment, he paid Rs 50,000 at a bus stop in Marathahalli. In February, he paid Rs 1.5 lakh at the same place followed by Rs 36,000 and six pieces of silver. Vishwa did not stop at that. He continued threatening Brijesh who was forced to pay another Rs 4 lakh and 11 silver pieces.
When Brijesh’s father realised that cash and jewellery had disappeared from the house, he suspected his daughter-in-law and questioned her. That’s when Brijesh confessed that he had been stealing valuables to pay the blackmailer.
A police complaint was registered earlier this month. Police got Brijesh to contact Vishwa and offer to pay some more cash. When Vishwa came to collect money, cops swung into action and arrested him. Officials have recovered cash from Vishwa.
Police said Vishwa had photos of Rashmi and was planning to blackmail her as well.
