Another cloudy day in Delhi with possibilities of light rain

NEW DELHI: Light thundershowers hit the capital on Wednesday, with spells of light rain recorded in different parts of the city along with strong winds. The air quality of the city also improved substantially as the particulate matter levels were recorded below safe standards.

The maximum and minimum on Wednesday were 29.5 degree Celsius, seven points below normal, and 19 degree, three notches below normal.


Earlier, on Tuesday, too, due to the rain and wind, the maximum temperature fell by almost 10 degrees since Monday — settling at 30.7 degrees Celsius, six notches below normal for this time of the season.

In terms of rainfall till 8.30am, 1mm rainfall was recorded on Wednesday at Safdurjung, which is considered as the base for Delhi, while till 5.30pm it was trace. At the station at Jafarpur, 4mm rainfall was recorded till 8.30am while till 5.30, it was 1mm.


According to the IMD, the western disturbance that caused severe weather over major parts of northwest India and adjoining central India on Tuesday, has further moved eastwards.


“Fairly widespread rainfall with isolated thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds (speed reaching 40-50 kmph) are likely over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, northeast Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand during next 24 hours,” said an IMD bulletin on Wednesday.


On Thursday, the city might see partly cloudy sky with possibility of very light rain or thundershowers. The maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 33 and 18 degrees Celsius respectively.


In terms of pollution,Delhi air improved to satisfactory levels as the air quality index clocked 84. Data according to CPCB’s central control room, meanwhile, showed Delhi-NCR’s average PM10 readings well below the safe standard on Wednesday. While the average PM2.5 readings at 7pm were recorded at 27.1 micrograms per cubic metre, the average PM10 readings at the same time were 81.8 micrograms per cubic metre. The safe standard for both these ultra-fine particulates is 60 and 100 micrograms per cubic metres respectively.
