KOLKATA: The morning after TOI reported how a 10km stretch of VIP Road has become a killer zone, Bidhannagar cops swung into action and took out a drive against errant bus and auto drivers who speed, change lanes and flout norms on the city’s most important link road with the airport.
On Wednesday, TOI had reported how motorists on VIP Road continued to violate traffic norms even after two back-to-back fatal accidents on consecutive days along the stretch — one involving a bus on Monday and another involving an app cab and a truck on Tuesday. Around 11.30am, a team of officers from Baguiati traffic guard started a drive from Baguiati crossing, stopping buses overtaking from the left or overspeeding. At the same time, another team of officers on the other flank of the road conducted a drive against helmetless bike riders and those driving against traffic.
From the early afternoon, the action shifted to Joramandir and Raghunathpur, where another team of officers dealt with autos plying illegally with excess passengers. TOI on Wednesday had written how none of the autos leave the stand in these areas without taking five passengers, violating traffic rules.
Late in the afternoon, TOI spotted cops penalizing the driver of a government AC bus for dropping off passengers in the middle of the road. The driver’s job card was seized. “On Wednesday, we also booked a bus on the Santragachhi-Barasat route against which we had received a complaint of rash and negligent driving on Tuesday night,” an officer said.
Senior officers of the commissionerate said the drive against errant drivers will continue for now. “The complaints against rash driving and traffic violations have been mounting for the past few days. Hence, we have undertaken the drive and will sustain it,” the officer added.
