MUMBAI: The Christian community will fast and attend special prayer at Good Friday on Thursday to commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ upon the cross. Scenes of the Passion (suffering) will be enacted in the streets and in individual parishes.
Maundy Thursday was observed on Wednesday. Priests washed the feet of marginalised groups to signify that the "servant is not greater than his master, nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him."
On Good Friday, archbishop of Bombay Oswald Cardinal Gracias will celebrate mass at Cross Maidan at 5.30pm. Thousands of people will join the five-hour Passion Play walk in Santacruz. "This rally is held annually since 32 years," said organiser Joe Dias of CSF.
For the last 15 years, Alan D'Souza has been enacting the part of Jesus Christ. The 33-year-old musician said, "It is emotional every time. I remember an old woman coming to bow before me to seek blessings. I had to explain that I am a mere actor," he said. As he carries a wooden cross through the length of the journey, an assistant comes up to dab "blood" on his wounds to make them appear real.
Make-up artiste Adwait Nayak of Dadar, who ordinarily crafts wigs for cancer patients, crafts D'Souza's beard and scars of crucifixion, especially the raw wound beneath the ribs. "My father did this assignment for years. I have taken over since he passed away," Nayak said.
On Saturday, a procession signifying the Resurrection will be led around Agripada by the United Christians of Mumbai.
The festival of Easter will be celebrated Sunday.
