Two detained in Sikkim for violating MCC released

Police has released two persons, including a professor of a Delhi-based organisation, who were detained for allegedly carrying out survey work related to the assembly and polls held in the state on April 11.

The district administration had deemed the survey exercise carried out by the two researchers to be violation of the model code of conduct (MCC).

"We have released the two individuals on Wednesday, who were caught doing an illegal survey work for a Delhi-based organisation..." (East) Kapil Meena, who is also the of the East District, said.

"We also warned them of serious consequences for a repeat violation of the MCC, which will remain in place in till next month," he said.

The had earlier written to the East District administration, seeking release of his two colleagues, as they were conducting "post-poll survey works for purely academic purposes".

Meena also said notices will be issued to the institution in under the MCC provisions and sections of the Representation of People's Act, 1951, for not obtaining prior permission for undertaking survey-related exercise in

Polling for 32 assembly and one seat in the state was held on April 11.
