The Vejalpur police on Tuesday registered a complaint against the postmaster of Juhapura post office, Mohammed Shoaib Saiyad, for taking Rs15 lakh from the post office for personal use.

The incident came to light when auditors went to the post office on a regular check to attest the balance in the lockers. According to the complaint filed by Nitin Sardev and Arpit Patel, auditors from the city division of the post office, while the computers showed a balance of Rs 26.5 lakh, the lockers were short of Rs 15 lakh.

On questioning, Saiyad broke down and confessed that he had taken the money for personal use, including loaning it. The incident came to light on March 20, but the auditors asked Saiyad to first return the money. Police said he returned Rs 15 lakh in two installments between March 22 and 24. Interestingly, despite the case coming to light in March, authorities registered a case only in April. Police inspector LD Odedara said that Saiyed is yet to be arrested as he is missing.
