CHANDIGARH: Everything seems to be not going well in government schools of Chandigarh. A new trend has come to the fore, wherein teachers are forcing students to study subjects in Hindi medium.
On Tuesday, a complaint was made in this regard by parents of a student to the district education officer (DEO) against a teacher in Government Model Senior Secondary School in Sector 8, Chandigarh, who had been allegedly forcing students to study in Hindi medium.
The complainant's parents told TOI that their daughter had studied in a private English medium school till Class X and under the centralised admission scheme for Class XI she was allotted Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, Chandigarh, by the education department.
"Recently, when the new session for Class XII began, her teacher started forcing her to study in Hindi medium. We have brought this to the notice of the principal of the school as well, but nothing has been done so far. Therefore, I was left with no other option but to request the education department to intervene. This matter concerns the future of our daughter," they maintained.
In their complaint to the district education officer, the parents have stated that, "The sociology teacher for Class XII is forcing children to opt for sociology in Hindi medium, citing her inability to teach the same in English. The students who have already passed the subject in Class XI in English medium are either dictated to leave the subject and opt for another or are being dictated to take the same in Hindi medium. This is being done while knowing the fact that the child has already been registered under the CBSE in Class XI and no changes can be done without the permission of parents.
Moreover at this stage, when students have never studied the subject (social science) in Class X and sociology in XI in Hindi medium, this possibility is next to impossible."
"It is quite disturbing as well as inappropriate on the part of the teacher as well as the school to even suggest the same, but in this case they are being mentally harassed and forcibly being coaxed to do this in accordance with the wishes of the teacher," they said.
She even informed the DEO through an email, a copy of which is with TOI, that the matter was highlighted to the principal on phone, but nothing has been done in this regard, leaving the poor students in the lurch.
However, if teachers of government school are to be believed, the problem has arisen because the education department has offered all three mediums - Hindi, Punjabi and English in all schools - while the teachers comfortable in teaching in each language have not been provided.
Also, in some schools the number of students preferring each language differs, following which the students are asked to study in one language only, in which the teacher is comfortable or in language that is preferred by the maximum number of students.
Talking to TOI, Anujit Kaur, district education officer said, "I am yet to see the complaint. I will look into the matter."
