Bharuch/Surat: Dr Anil Desai, the visionary founder of The Society for Education Welfare and Action-Rural (SEWA Rural) died in Jhagadia on Tuesday night.
Dr Desai, who had left his flourishing medical practice in New York to serve the poor, had set up this health, education and women empowerment service-oriented institution in 1980 to improve the health condition of people rural and tribal areas of Bharuch, Narmada, and Tapi.
He was 78.
Nearly 35 years ago, two young doctors - Dr Desai and Lata Desai, left their five-year medical practice in New York and decided to return home just to serve to poor in Bharuch district. They made Jhagadia as their base. The decision to return and give back to the society was made keeping with the oath to serve the poor in their own country taken as medical students in Ahmedabad.
The husband-wife duo was also influenced by the teachers of Ramkrishna Paramhansa and Swami Vivekananda.
Their efforts resulted in poor people living in Jhagadia and surrounding areas get access of quality healthcare. SEWA Rural's 100-bed hospital in Jhagadia provides round-the-clock treatment and emergency services. The hospital has approximately 70,000 outpatients and 12,000 indoor patients every year. Nearly 2,800 deliveries and 5,000 surgeries are also conducted every year.
SEWA Rural works in 600 villages jointly with the state government to enhance healthcare and community health services by providing training to the local tribals.
Dr Desai also worked tirelessly to help people get rid of their superstitions and beliefs in witch doctors.
