PUNE: A 50-year-old man from Khed became the second victim of lightning strike in the district this year and two women were injured in the same location on Tuesday.
Two more deaths occurred because of lightning in Amravati on April 16 and 17, taking the toll in Maharashtra to 14 so far, revealed records with the state disaster management authorities. Data on fatalities are trickling in from the districts to the state authorities and the toll may go up.
Met department officials said thunder activity in Maharashtra was, however, expected to recede and the state was likely to go dry from Thursday.
A district disaster management official said Haridas Mahadu Gokule (50), a resident of Chinchoshi village in Khed, died after lightning struck him. The two women — Anjana Haridas Gokule (44) and Rupali Balasaheb Gokule (4) — were injured after being struck by lightning in the same place. They were admitted to a hospital in Chakan.
Mahesh Bhor died after lightning struck him in the Mauje Bhorwadi area of Junnar tauka in Pune district on Monday.
On Wednesday, Mahadev Daiji was struck by lightning in an Amravati village. A state disaster management department official said he was from Uttar Pradesh.
Anupam Kashyapi, head of weather, India Meteorological Department (IMD) Pune, said, “We do not expect any rainnor thunderstorm. Maharashtra has been given a ‘dry’ forecast for next few days.”
He said, “All the systems that were causing rainfall and thunder over the state are fast dissipating now. The presence of an anticyclone at the surface level will ensure that there is not much moisture supply from Thursday.”
