Mohali police book four travel agents for operating illegally

MOHALI: While continuing their special drive against illegal immigration agents in the district, cops have booked four more travel agents.

Cops said the accused failed to produce any mandatory documents related to their work. Some of them were operating without licence and some were working beyond limits of their licence. On Monday, Mohali police had booked four travel agents.


Cops added that during the raids they scanned records and documents of over 50 travel agents. Mohali senior superintendent of police (SSP), Harcharan Singh Bhullar had said they have constituted various teams of 20 deputy superintendent of police (DSP) to conduct raids and scan records of travel agents.

The team had raided at least 50 offices of travel agents and scanned records of their offices. Cops asked these travel agents to show mandatory documents required for their immigration business. However, they failed to do so.


Now, around eight cases under Sections 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and 120-b (punishment of criminal conspiracy) of the IPC and under The Punjab Travel Professionals’ Regulation Rules, 2012 have been registered at various police stations of Mohali district.


The Punjab Travel Professionals’ Regulation Rules, 2012 makes it mandatory for all travel agents or those running ticketing or consultancy business, to register with the government. Those who have been in the trade for over five years have to pay a license fee of Rs 1 lakh and who have not completed five years have to pay Rs 25,000.


The immigration agents should not be involved in any crime when they seek the licence. The act has a provision for a maximum of imprisonment of seven years and fine of up to Rs 50,000 for any travel agent who violates this law or indulges in human trafficking.


Sources said Mohali has witnessed around 79 % rise in travel frauds last year.
