Chattanooga police say a man opened fire on their officers.

That's when they fired back, and injured him.

It happened tonight just before 7 p.m.

In the 2-thousand block of cleveland avenue.

Investigators say the officers were trying to make contact with the individual.

That's when witnesses say the man fired a gun at the officers.

The officers then returned fire, and injured the suspect.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene, and took him to a local hospital.

None of the officers got injured.

A firearm believed to be the suspect's was recovered at the scene.

The officers involved are being put on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.

The hamilton county sheriff's office is now in charge of the criminal investigation.
