Salt Lake woes: Water lines laid in March, roads stay cratered in April

Read MoreKOLKATA: The civic body’s inability to repair roads for about a month after taking up important public utility works is leaving stretches of the important First Avenue in Salt Lake in a bad shape, creating much inconvenience to motorists.
Traffic congestion has become a regular affair around Baisakhi Island in the township as long stretches of the First Avenue have been dug up for water-pipeline laying work. The pipelines will bring filtered water from the New Town water treatment plant.
The snarls are mainly occurring on the stretch from Tank No. 5 to Baisakhi. Once the work is getting over, the dug-up areas are being filled up in a haphazard manner, leaving the road surface uneven.
“During rush hours on Tuesday, office-goers and motorists faced the brunt of the bad road. Also, some vehicles were diverted to the other flank,” said Sankhadeep Roy Chowdhury, a resident of AE block.
The water pipes were laid in March on both sides of the stretch from Tank No. 5 to Baisakhi Island, which is a two-lane stretch and about 15-feet wide. The dug-up portion has been haphazardly filled up with bricks, leaving only 5-feet space for vehicles to ply on.
“The stretch was in perfect condition before the pipeline-laying work. Once laying work on a certain stretches is completed, the civic authorities should immediately take up repair work to restore the roads,” said a commuter.
“We will look into the matter,” said Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) deputy mayor Tapas Chatterjee, who looks after roads department. The civic authorities are already under much pressure to carry out regular road repair and maintenance work in a number of places in the township. Road stretches in many places, including both the main roads and roads in the blocks, are in a very bad shape. A civic official said the agency entrusted with the job of laying pipeline in Salt Lake should properly fill the dug-up parts, so that the civic authorities can apply bitumen layer on the top to make the surface even.
