PUNE: A 19-year-old college student sitting on the pavement of Kirloskar Pneumatic rail overbridge suffered a serious injury after a motorcyclist riding in the wrong direction ran over his right leg.
The student, Vishwas Ganesh Khilare, a resident of Martandeyanagar at Vaiduwadi, suffered a fracture in the accident, which occurred at the beginning of the bridge at Vaiduwadi Chowk in Hadapsar on Sunday night. He is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Hadapsar.
The motorcyclist fled from the scene of the accident. Vishwas is a Class XII student of Camp Education Society in Pune Cantonment.
“Vishwas and his friend were on their way to Vishrantwadi on a motorcycle,” Vishwas’s father Ganesh, who works as a peon at Pune Municipal Corporation, told TOI. “They stopped at a filling station for petrol,” Ganesh added.
Vishwas was riding pillion. On seeing a long line at the pump, Vishwas got off and told his friend to pick him up from the bridge.
“Vishwas walked onto the bridge and waited for a while. When it looked like his friend will take time, Vishwas sat on the pavement. He stretched his right leg and was looking at his mobile phone, when 3-4 motorcycles riding on wrong side rode towards Vaiduwadi Chowk from Hadapsar. One of the motorcyclists, who was speeding, ran over my son’s right leg and sped away,” Ganesh said.
Vishwas’s leg was fractured and he lay writhing in pain when his friend found him. “His friend alerted us. We rushed him to two hospitals before finally admitting him in the third. He underwent a surgery on Monday,” Khilare added.
“The accident occurred suddenly. The victim could not note down the bike’s registration number. We will check CCTV cameras to zero in on the rider,” a police officer said.
“We have installed barricades and bollards to deter motorists from wrong-side driving, but they remove barricades to gain illegal access. We often nab them and lodge FIRs,” inspector (traffic) Rajendra Jadhav said.
However, citizens feel more needs to be done. “Vaiduwadi and Ramtekdi Chowks are accident-prone. Youths ride two-wheelers without licences and often on the wrong side. They even quarrel with the traffic police when caught. This menace can be curbed only by a strict enforcement of rules by traffic police,” activist Ram Kasbe said.
