Rajkot: A total of 223gm brown sugar, worth Rs 22.33 lakh, was seized and a woman and her son arrested in Jangaleshwar locality of Rajkot on Tuesday night.
Police said the accused, identified as Zubeda Belim (70) and her son Rafiq (50), had allegedly brought the contraband from Surat to sell it among college students of Rajkot.
“The mother-son duo were arrested on the basis of a tip-off about them carrying the contraband on their two-wheeler. We intercepted their vehicle on Jangaleshwar-Devpara Road and seized the contraband,” said Hitesh Gadhvi, inspector with Rajkot crime branch.
Rafiq was released from the jail five months ago after being incarcerated in a murder case for 21 years in which he had killed a man in 1996.
“Rafiq confessed to selling brown sugar to small time drug dealers, who would sell the contraband to college students. We are producing the mother-son duo before a court here to seek their remand to find out the source who had supplied them the drugs,” added Gadhvi.
