Minneapolis to Chicago in minutes? Thanks to Badger students, that could soon be reality

Travel can wear on all of us.

Instead of hours ... imagine cutting the trip from chicago to minneapolis to minutes.

That's still a far-away scenario ..

But a group of uw madison students is helping to lay the groundwork.

Christina lorey is live on campus with how you can get a sneak peak of their newest design.

A group of mostly undergrad uw- madison students known as the "badgerloop team" spend a lot o time on campus here ..

Not just in class.

Instead, they've been busy building and perfecting their latest innovation.

It's a pod designed to reach top speed in a hyperloop.

Think of that like a train rail surrounded by a vaccuum tube so there's no air resistence.

The idea is to cut down on transportation times from cities that may be too close to book a flight between but still a long drive ..

Say from chicago to the twin cities.

Jack swanson industry relations lead, badgerloop team 17:05 "the whole idea of the hyperloop pod and hyperloop technology is to push the boundaries of how fast you can go on ground transportation and to kind of suppliment planes trains and autmobiles as another method of high speed transportation from city to city."

While the team says that reality is likely far off ..

It could be the future of transportation.

You'll be able to check out the pod at an event here at the memorial union at 7 tonight.

It's the team's fourth pod ..

They enter them every year in a worldwide competition.

We'll have more on that coming up at six.
