HanTeng Red 01 Is An Interesting EV Concept, Despite The Cheese Grater Grille

Chinese brand HanTeng showed up to this year’s Shanghai Auto Show with an interesting sedan concept dubbed the Red 01, which will be available as a battery-powered electric car as well as with a regular 2.0-liter internal combustion engine.

The Red 01 was penned by a Belarusian designer, representing a future mass production four-door sedan, although technically it’s more of a fastback, given its practical tailgate design.

Sharp enough to cut

While some carmakers prefer their designs to feature clean lines with very few creases in the bodywork, HanTeng have gone the exact opposite way for the Red 01. Almost every one of its surfaces has an angular shape, to go with the surprisingly high shoulder line, aggressive-looking front fascia, sloped roof line and a BMW-like hockey stick insert embedded within the rear profile.

The large multi-spoke wheels help give the Red 01 an imposing stance, while the wing mirror cameras offer a touch of futurism – although it’s unknown whether or not those will revert back to traditional mirrors once the Red 01 ditches its ‘concept’ moniker.

Two massively different powertrains

Reportedly, the entry-level version will come with the same 190 HP Mitsubishi 4G63S4T 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine as the HanTeng X7 crossover, an engine that also produces 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque. The EV model however will boast an electric all-wheel drive system, with a claimed range of roughly 600 km (372 miles).

While the battery capacity hasn’t been disclosed, word has it that the module will be positioned in the lower part of the floor, similar to how it is in a Tesla Model S, although we wouldn’t go as far as to call this a potential Tesla rival just yet.
