Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in an interview to news agency ANI, has said: "On the election, I think it is the party which decides who contests from where. So I go by that." She was asked why is she not contesting the general election.
Polling in Tripura (East) LS seat deferred to April 23: EC
The Election Commission yesterday announced postponement of polling in the Tripura (East) Lok Sabha seat to the third phase on April 23 from April 18, saying the prevailing law and order situation there is not conducive for holding free and fair polls.
Citing reports of state chief electoral officer and special police observer, the poll panel said, "The law and order situation prevailing ... is not conducive to the holding of free and fair poll." (PTI)
Bundles of cash seized from shop in Tamil Nadu, police open fire to disperse AMMK cadres
Authorities conducted search at a store in the Theni Lok Sabha constituency in Tamil Nadu yesterday night following inputs about suspected cash, during which police had to open fire in the air to disperse supporters of the TTV Dhinakaran-led AMMK who objected to the action, officials said. (PTI)
Country will see Priyanka as a 'thief's wife', says Uma Bharti
Senior BJP leader Uma Bharti yesterday courted controversy by saying the country will see Priyanka Gandhi Vadra the way it views a "thief's wife", while claiming that the Congress General Secretary will have no impact on the outcome of Lok Sabha polls in Uttar Pradesh.
When asked to comment on the impact the Congress leader could have on the poll outcome, the firebrand BJP leader told reporters in Chhattisgarh's Durg, "Nothing. Why will she have an impact... Whose husband is facing theft charges? She will be seen the way India sees a thief's wife." (PTI)
PM Modi using EC to threaten us: Kanimozhi
DMK leader Kanimozhi, whose residence was raided by IT Department earlier in the evening, said in a statement that she feels the raids are being conducted "because I am the candidate of the Opposition".
"The EC officials accepted that there is no cash or documents found in my house. Tamilsai (Tamil Nadu BJP chief) has parked several crores of rupees in her residence. Is the EC ready to conduct searches there? DMK will not be perturbed by these incidents. We will fight against these forces. These incidents strongly confirm that PM Modi is using EC to threaten us," Kanimozhi said.

DMK leader Kanimozhi's Tuticorin residence raided by Income Tax Dept
Kanimozhi, daughter of late DMK supremo Karunanidhi, was raided by Income Tax officials today. She is contesting Lok Sabha polls from Tuticorin constituency.
While DMK chief Stalin has said that the raids are a "major conspiracy" against them, IT officials have claimed that the raids were a part of routine procedure.

President Ram Nath Kovind rescinds election to Vellore parliamentary constituency in Tamil Nadu. The Election Commission had sent a recommendation to that effect dated April 14, 2019.
The decision to recommend cancellation came after a large sum of cash was allegedly seized from the DMK candidate's office a few days ago.
The district police had filed a complaint against DMK candidate Kathir Anand as well as two party functionaries on the basis of a report from the Income Tax department on April 10.
