Over 29 lakh voters to cast their votes in district today

Coimbatore: With an expectation of high turnout on the D-Day, Thursday, officials on Wednesday swung into action to conduct a free and fair election in the district.
Electronic voting machines (EVMs), control units and VVPATs were sent to the respective polling booths with police protection from strong rooms. Presiding officers and polling officers also reached the polling booths on Wednesday night and they were advised to stay on the polling booth premises. The polling process would start at 7am. The district has 29,02,510 voters.
More than 6,000 police personnel and 14 companies of paramilitary have descended on Coimbatore to provide security for the general election.
Senior election officers, including the district collector, supervised the arrangements for the polling. Flying squads crisscrossed the district to check money distribution to voters by political parties.
A senior police officer said, “We have deployed 1,288 police personnel from Coimbatore city, 120 from the Tamil Nadu special police, 40 from Tamil Nadu Commando Force, 432 from Central Armed Police (CAP) for the election duty. The city police will man 1,196 booths located in 244 places coming under Coimbatore North, Coimbatore South, Singanallur and Thondamuthur assembly constituencies. Over all we have deployed 2,286 police personnel.”
There are 59 vulnerable locations under the city limit and four central armed police will be deployed in each location to protect the campus of the polling stations. As many as 31 places were selected for police pickets.
One sub-inspector and three other ranking cadres were deployed in each picket.
The Coimbatore rural police have deployed 3,749 police personnel, including central armed police (CAP), covering 2,107 booths located in 845 locations. “We have received seven companies of central armed police (560 numbers) and they were deployed in vulnerable booths. We have 35 police stations and three special beats were formed in each police station limits. Police were asked to present in the beats and they would react immediately if any untoward incidents happened. The rural police are also covering 170 booths located in 68 places in Udumalpet and 132 polling booths in 51 locations in Avinashi in Tirupur district,” a police officer said.
