Gold worth Rs 51.8 lakh seized from passengers in Chennai

CHENNAI: Customs officials seized 1.58kg of gold, worth Rs 51.8 lakh, from three passengers here on Sunday and Monday.
On Sunday, the officers of the Additional Flying Squad-Election Commission handed over two men to customs officials who were nabbed by them at Triplicane here on suspicion that they were carrying gold.
Syed Shaf Khan, 48, and Mohamed Moideen, 59, are residents of Chennai and they had travelled from Kuala Lumpur to Trichy by an AirAsia flight.
When searched, rubbery materials were recovered along with gold chains and gold Ingots. On extraction, 1.17kg of gold, valued at Rs 38.31 lakh, was recovered. One of them was arrested.
On Monday, customs officials intercepted Irshath Ahamed Mohamed Nizar,22, of Ramanathapuram, who had arrived here from Dubai in an IndiGo Airline flight.
A gold cut bit weighing 25 gram was recovered from his pants pocket. Gold in rubbery form was also recovered from him. He had concealed the gold by stitching the waist portion of his underwear.
On extraction, 386 gram of gold was recovered. A total of 411 gram of gold, valued at Rs.13.5 lakh, was seized.
