Three labourers working at a construction site in Nagpada were hospitalised with grievous injuries after a temporary wooden platform they were working on collapsed on Monday.

According to the Nagpada police, the incident occurred around 3.15 p.m. in a ground-plus-17-storey under-construction building opposite Nagpada police station on Peer Khan Street. The first seven floors of the building have a car lift gap. The labourers were completing work on a slab on the third floor when the platform that they were standing on crashed.

“The workers had created a temporary platform using plywood on iron beams. They were standing on it while working on the slab on the third floor when a beam gave way. As a result, the platform came crashing down along with the workers,” police inspector Vidyasagar Kalkundre, Nagpada police station, said.

The three workers — Tajubul Shaikh (23), Abhimanyu Roy (32) and Hamjabin Allabin (28) — were rushed to J.J. Hospital. While Mr. Shaikh sustained a fracture on his left foot and abrasions on the chest, Mr. Allabin has injuries on his left toe and left side of the face. Mr. Roy has suffered head injuries, besides having injured his right foot and hand.

“The three labourers are currently out of danger and stable. We have kept them under observation,” Dr. Sanjay Surase, medical superintendent, J.J. Hospital, said.

Meanwhile, the police have found that the labourers were not wearing any safety gear. “The labourers did not have safety gear like helmet and fastening belt, while working on the plywood board. We have made a station diary entry and have kept the case open for an expert opinion, as we are not sure about negligence involved here. Industrial safety experts will be visiting the site, on the basis of which we will decide our further course of action,” Mr. Kalkundre said.

All the three injured labourers hail from West Bengal, and stayed at the construction site, officials said.
