Russell Wilson: “Hey Seattle, we got a deal”

Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson is apparently keeping that title for some time yet to come.

In a video posted to his Twitter account at 12:44 a.m. PDT, Wilson said from his bed that he has a new deal with the Seahawks.

“Hey Seattle, we got a deal,” Wilson said.

Wilson and his wife, Ciara, then both added a “Go Hawks!” before Wilson implored everyone to go to bed.

“I’m going to see y’all in the morning. Time for y’all to go to bed,” Wilson said.

Wilson and his agent, Mark Rodgers, had imposed a deadline on April 15th as the final time they would address a new contract with the Seahawks ahead of the final year of his existing contract. That deadline apparently was enough to spark action to a deal getting finalized either late Monday night or early Tuesday morning.

Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reports that the deal is worth $140 million in new money with a $65 million signing bonus. The contract makes Wilson the highest-paid player in the NFL, surpassing Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Per Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times, the deal is a four-year extension that will make the total contract a five-year deal worth $157 million through the 2023 season. That combines the $140 million of the new deal and the $17 million Wilson was set to make in 2019 in the final year of his existing contract.

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports Wilson will receive $107 million guaranteed and his contract contains a no-trade clause.

  1. All the rumors … all the – his wife wants NY – all the off season, fill the pages with anything, is over ! Nooooo. …. we need more rumors – and draft stuff – and trades and and and and

  2. Go Hawks!!!

Now sign Clark and then Bobby Wags. Schneider, you said “you have enough to sign all 3″… OK we heard you.

Now Do It! Too much Starbucks tonight.

  3. Holy cow. I’m a little stunned to be honest. Greatful but stunned. Hopefully the Seahawks didn’t cave on their guarentees and both sides mutually compromised.

  4. Congratulations to both Wilson and the Seahawks. Had the Seattle front office blown this deal it would have a been a mistake of colossal proportions.

  5. Bad move. Paying an aging quarterback is fine. Paying an aging mobile quarterback is a recipe for disaster.

  6. But… but… but… I thought Jack del Rio said he would be playing in NYC? I thought your sources said he wanted out of Seattle? I thought he was gonna force his way out of town via the Franchise tag. What happened???

    Lol.

    #GoHawks

  7. Knew they wouldn’t trade him or bank on drafting someone better. Just a matter of time.

  8. If I was an NFL owner my team would be perpetual losers because I’m not paying out money like that to no one. All of these must have players haven’t won anything. A Super Bowl here and there and mediocrity on between ain’t cutting it. So yeah.

  9. So many haters on PFT! The guy wants to remain loyal and stay with his franchise. He’s been in the Top 5 or 6 QB rankings for a number of years. How many other teams can say that? SERIOUSLY – how many? Take out Brady and Brees and the list narrows to almost nothing so enjoy your mix of consistency and success. Maybe if Seattle could “hit” on an actual running back, wideout, TE or just about every other position on the field, the team would be winning more. You don’t have to like Wilson as a person. Just respect the talent for heaven’s sake.

  10. 35 million a year for one player is essentially saying were not going to win a Lombardi for the next 5 years .

  11. Other fans don’t realize how awesome Russ is play to plat because they don’t see every play, every week.

They’re inept to think he’s just a mobile Qb but top 3 in every PFF metric. Deep ball passing, accuracy from the pocket, ball placement. Then look at the TD to Int ratio

He led the NFL un tds in 2017. All while playing for a weak head coach who wants to run the ball behind an OL that has been garbage since 2014, below avg weapons. Lockett and Baldwin are decent but the incredible accuracy makes those 2.

Since Beast mode left, its been a below to average stable of running backs.

So how is RW a top 3 QB and does MORE with LESS than any QB in the NFL?

The dude is extremely gifted and has a golden right arm. He won’t regress as he ages bcuz his arm is lethal, just like my sports acumen.

    Go Hawks!!

  12. Your posts amount to,”they shouldn’t pay that ‘colored guy’ that kind of money.” Racists want a 2-tier system that pays black athletes less. Imagine that. Doing the same job better than your peers should lead to a true ‘market value’ decision, but historically there’s a reason to NOT pay people of a darker hue.

If Wilson is not worth his pay, I challenge you to name the QBs that are.

  13. Number 2 all-time in Passer Rating
217 career TD passes (31 per year)
Best Deep Ball thrower in the NFL
    Number 2 all-time in TD/Interception ratio
Only player in NFL HISTORY to throw for 300 yards and run for 100 yards in the same game.
One of only two players in NFL HISTORY to throw 4,000 yards and run for 500 yards in a single season (Steve Young)

I could go on and on…

Well deserved. Instant Hall of Famer

  14. A lot of jealousy here. I think Russell Wilson is a fantastic QB – as a Patriots fan, he is the guy that i’d select over any other QB (who isn’t on a rookie deal) to replace Brady. His offensive weapons have always been underwhelming, all the money goes into that D (although the era of the Legion Of Boom is definitely over).

People seem to think it’s so easy to ‘just select a cheaper rookie QB’ when teams have been trying that for decades with very little success. When you have a great QB, you keep him.

  15. Better than average qb, but Seattle overpaid! Why would you stay in such a depressed city like seattle? All there money dumped into there qb, he better perform!

  16. I’m all for players getting their due, but the salary escalation over the past 5-10 years seems a little wild. I realize cap increases cover a lot of it and owners are pocketing hand-over-fist, but still — never-ending leap-frogging of salaries. Also, Wilson the highest paid player in the NFL? I don’t get it.

  17. Oh my…paying the QB $35 Million per year and the other players at the top of their position 1/3-1/2 of that isn’t going to age well.

The formula to win is a young QB on a rookie deal (Or a Superstar with a supermodel wife who can offset a team friendly deal #Patriots #Brady) with the established players making good bank.

    Silly rabbits –

  18. I’m sure everyone in the pacific northwest was staying awake past midnight on a Tuesday just to hear about Wilson’s contract news. Ego much, Russ?

    Overpaid

    ————————–

No, that is just what it costs to keep a starting caliber QB nowadays. Regardless of if he is the best in the league, this is just how it goes, though I feel the annual money has escalated extremely quickly; it was almost just yesterday Matt Ryan became the first to get $30m/year, then Erin surpassed it, now Russ. Get that money while you can, though. Won’t be long before we have a $40m/year guy.

  20. Good luck fielding a contender and resigning existing players! So Wilson says, ” make me the highest paid QB by this date or else” and they do it! Hawks have a heck of a team player in RWilson, better win it all this year Mr Highest Paid, …….OR ELSE!

  21. Kiss your goodbye for any chance of a superbowl that contract will hinder the franchise for years to come. The only celebration is that you make the playoffs and count that as an achievement.

  22. He will be traded in Two years after they start Dumping players because the can’t afford anybody’s else. Window is now small to win a Super Bowl 🏟 again . Seems like he is happy and why not if Eli has made 200 million

  23. Le’t see how he feels about all that money when the team cannot put a decent O line in front of him

Are you serious with this post??? How in the world can you extract this sentiment from what other posters are saying??? This is not a race issue so stop trying to make it one. Who’s the racist one here??? Unbelievable.

  25. Should have said “Hey Seattle, it’s going to be hard for us to field a really good team because I wanted too much money.”

  26. The cost just gets passed on to the 12th man, enjoy Seattle fans. Astronomical ticket prices coming soon to an NFL stadium near you. All these mega contracts gonna make the cap balloon and where does that money come from, the owners? Hah, nope.

  27. Wilson started in 2012. Since then:

Hawks have winning record every year
Appeared in playoffs 6 times in 7 yrs
    3 Divisional games
    2 Super Bowls

So lets talk about how much Russ sucks, sounds like fun.

The ticket prices in Seattle are already astronomical.
