CHENNAI: Police arrested two men for kidnapping and raping a 17-year-old girl after giving her a sedative-laced soft drink, near Tirvuallur on Tuesday.

Police identified the duo as Bhoopalan, 22, and Munusamy, 43, construction labourers from Tiruvallur district.

The victim came from Krishnagiri along with a group of women on Monday, who were hired to clean the banks of a river. While she was clearing the garbage, the duo approached her and offered her some drink. Other women were away as it was lunchtime. They invited her to their autorickshaw which they had parked nearby, police said.

“They lured the girl with a soft drink laced with some sedative, saying that it would quench her thirst in the hot weather,” said an investigating officer. Since the drink was mixed with some sedative, the girl soon fell drowsy and dozed off inside the auto. Taking advantage of this, the duo took her behind the auto and raped her.

However, she became conscious and started crying for help. On hearing her scream, other women ran to the spot and saw her being assaulted. Though the due tried to escape, the women caught and thrashed them.

The girl, who sustained injuries, was sent for treatment and medical check-up at a government hospital nearby.

They informed the all-women police station in the locality and the duo were handed over. Police booked them under the Pocso Act and remanded them in judicial custody.
