LUCKNOW: Seven railway employees were charged with abetment of suicide on Tuesday after the brother of the woman, who allegedly committed suicide by jumping off a four-storey building on Sunday, filed a complaint against them.

The woman, a railway employee, had claimed in her suicide note that she was being sexually harassed by her seniors and colleagues. The note has been sent to Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for ascertaining its authenticity.

Circle officer (Alambagh) Sanjeev Sinha said, “An FIR has been registered against seven railway officials on the charges of abetment of suicide on the complaint of victim’s brother.”

“The complainant has said that his sister (victim) was being harassed by her colleagues and had narrated her ordeal to him over the phone,” the police officer added.

“The autopsy report says that the woman died due to head injuries. She had multiple fractures in her limbs and skull. These were caused due to fall from the fourth floor of the building. Since an FIR has been registered, we will inform the department whose officers have been booked and then their statements would be recorded,” the CO added.

The victim’s brother told TOI that his sister was facing harassment at her workplace since October 2018 and no official initiated action despite several complaints to them.

“I personally went and met senior deputy commercial manager (DCM) who assured us her transfer. But nothing happened, instead the behaviour of her colleagues turned more harsh towards her,” he added.

When TOI contacted divisional railway manager (DRM) Satish Kumar, he said that the case has been taken over by police and investigation has been taken over.

“I have not come across any complaint of harassment submitted by the woman staffer. We follow all norms of sexual harassment committee at the workplace,” he added.

Brother had pacified distraught woman

The woman had made last call to her brother around 9.30pm on April 13. Her brother said that she told him over phone that she was sick and tired of the harassment since no action was taken despite several complaints to seniors. She also said that she doesn’t want to live any more. “I told her to be patient as no problem lasts forever. She seemed pacified but I don’t what happened later that she took the extreme step,” he told TOI.
