The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has provisionally attached properties worth ₹3.68 crore of former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala in connection with a corruption case. The agency alleged that his sons had acquired assets worth over ₹147 crore which were disproportionate to their known sources of income.
The properties include a flat, two parcels of land and a residential building.
The action has been taken under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act on the basis of a disproportionate assets case lodged, and chargesheet filed, by the Central Bureau of Investigation against Mr. Chautala and his two sons, the ED said.
“The CBI’s investigation revealed that Mr. Chautala allegedly acquired assets disproportionate to his known sources of income to the tune of ₹6.09 crore during the check period from May 1993 to May 2006.
Investigation also revealed that Abhay Singh Chautala and Ajay Singh Chautala had allegedly acquired assets disproportionate to their known source of income to the tune of ₹119.69 crore and ₹27.74 crore, respectively,” said the ED in a release on Monday.
According to the agency, the former Chief Minister had acquired immovable properties in Delhi and Panchkula, and also constructed a residential house at Sirsa in Haryana, using the money received from undisclosed sources.
Undisclosed income
Investigation revealed that Mr. Chautala had disclosed properties acquired using undisclosed income in the affidavits filed before the returning officer ahead of the State Assembly elections in 2005 and 2009, thereby “projecting publicly the tainted properties as untainted”, said the agency, adding that it had earlier attached assets worth ₹46.96 lakh in 2013 in the same case.
