Nagpur: Forty-eight hours after the murder of an elderly couple in Wadi area, police have claimed that the father of the accused used to threaten her about boycotting her from the property. Shankar Champati and his wife Seema were found with head injuries on Sunday night at their bungalow in Wadi. The city crime branch had arrested their adopted daughter Aishwarya and her cricketer boyfriend Mohd Eqhlak Khan for the murders.
On Tuesday, police had produced the accused before court and procured their PCR till April 22.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, DCP (crime) Nilesh Bharne said, “Shankar used to threaten Aishwarya that he will disinherit her from property and the father-daughter duo regularly used to get into fights over several issues. Aishwarya used to tell Khan about the fights and the duo decided to eliminate the couple.”
“They were sure that they won’t be caught as they had taken several technical precautions by deleting chats and social media accounts. Khan was not known to anyone in the Champati couple’s family neither among neighbours but we nabbed him,” added Bharne.
After being questioned about the negligence of Wadi police which did not act on a complaint filed by Shankar few months back about a man attacking him several times, Bharne and Zonal DCP Vivek Masal took a long pause before responding, “It was registered as a non cognisable (NC) offence and in such cases the complaint has to go to the court and only after court’s direction police can investigate the matter,” said Masal.
The man who attacked Shankar was later found to be Khan. Sources said had Wadi police acted on time, the tragedy could have been averted as Shankar had also shared a temporary number and make of the two-wheeler on which Khan had came to attack him but police did not track down the vehicle.
A retired a government official, Shankar owned a big bungalow in Wadi which has around 10 to 12 tenants. According to sources said, property of Shankar is worth crores.
Meanwhile, it is also learnt that Aishwarya and Khan had tried to execute their plan a week ago and had spiked the water melon of the couple with drugs but Shankar and Seema did not lose consciousness.
Khan later procured high power sleeping pills from a doctor claiming to use it for himself but Aishwarya used it to drug her parents.
Cops also received a clue against the accused as when Shankar was attacked earlier, Aishwarya and Khan had made around 100 calls in that period but this time they were not in contact through calls.
