MUMBAI: In a jolt to the Maharashtra government and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the Bombay high court on Tuesday ordered the authorities to stop work and ordered a status quo on the reclamation being carried out for the Mumbai coastal road project.
A division bench of chief justice Pradeep Nandrajog and justice Nitin Jamdar granted the order on PILs filed challenging clearances for the project. BMC and state had opposed an interim injunction against the work claiming it would cause a loss of over Rs 10 crore per day.
The bench on Tuesday heard from petitioners that despite the court asking BMC not to carry on further reclamation work, it was not being implemented. Reclamation work was going on at an "unprecedented pace" at Breach Candy, Napean Sea Road, near Tata Gardens and Worli, claimed senior advocates Janak Dwarakadas and Gayatri Singh.
Almost 34 kilometre coastal road will connect Marine Lines in South Mumbai to Kandivli in the North of the city. Last year, work started on the 10 kilometre stretch from Marine Lines to the Bandra-Worli Seal link at Worli.
The court will take up the petitions for further hearing on April 23, 2019.
