If you are caught on Victorian public transport without a valid ticket the Authorised Officer files a report with the Department of Transport
A spokeswoman for Public Transport Victoria told Daily Mail Australia if you're approached by a plain clothed Authorised Officer they must show their PTV identification.
'Authorised Officers work in either uniform or plain clothes on trains, trams and buses every day of the week,' the spokeswoman said.
Over 600 Authorised Officers work on the public transport network, checking tickets at stations and stops, major public transport interchanges and on trains, trams and buses.
'They play a vital role to keep public transport running smoothly and ensure everyone is paying their way,' the spokeswoman said.
If you are caught on Victorian public transport without a valid ticket the Authorised Officer files a report with the Department of Transport.
After assessing the report PTV may decide to fine the passenger, give them a warning or send them a court summons.
Failing to produce a valid ticket has a maximum fine of $242 for adults and $81 for minors.
