CHENNAI: President Ram Nath Kovind on Tuesday gave his nod to the Election Commission's recommendation to rescind the election in the Vellore Lok Sabha constituency in Tamil Nadu in the wake of seizure of unaccounted money from DMK candidate Kathir Anand.
Elections officials seized a total of Rs 11 crore + from Anand’s residence and a few other places.
"The President has given his nod for cancelling the election in Vellore following money being seized from DMK candidate Kathir Anand at the end of March," said Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra told TOI.
"Accepting the recommendation of the Election Commission of India dated April 14, 2019, the honourable President is pleased to rescind the election to Vellore parliamentary constituency in Tamil Nadu," said Election Commission spokeswoman Shefali Saran.
Reacting to the cancellation of the election, DMK treasurer S Duraimurugan called it murder of democracy.
