TRICHY: Thousands of devotees attended the annual Chithirai car festival at Samayapuram Arulmigu Mariamman temple near Trichy on Tuesday.

The 13-day-long annual Chithirai temple festival began on April 7. As scheduled, the temple car with the idol of the main goddess was pulled out of its base around 10.30am as devotees chanted ‘Om Shakthi.’


The wooden car was pulled through the four arterial streets around the temple.


Good Samaritans established water and buttermilk outlets for the benefit of devotees.


More than 500 policemen and fire service personnel were posted near the temple premises to ensure safety and security.
