Rivers cleaning drive to start from May 5
Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has finalized schedule for cleaning of Nag, Pili and Pora rivers. The one-month drive will kick-off from May 5 and will conclude on June 5.
Municipal commissioner Abhijit Bangar held a meeting with representatives of government and private agencies on Tuesday seeking their support for the drive. Representatives of NIT, MahaMetro, state PWD, MIDC, WCL, CREDAI, Kanak Resources etc were present.

Bangar urged government and private agencies to help by providing machineries. “It is everyone’s responsibility to conserve the rivers. Public participation in awareness drive and not polluting the rivers is must. Also, cleaning the rivers is necessary to prevent from floods during monsoon,” he said.

The NMC will have to clean rivers with total length of 48km within a span of one month.

It will be sixth year of rivers cleaning drive. Following TOI-MT’s Save Nag river- My City, My River campaign in 2013, the then mayor Anil Sole, now MLC, had started awareness and cleaning drive on three rivers. Excluding one year, the drive took place every year.

Cleaning of rivers every year helps in preventing floods, mosquito menace, foul smell etc in various parts of the city.

The NMC had proposed to rejuvenate Nag and Pili rivers by executing two projects worth Rs2,852 crore.
