CHENNAI: The widow of R Kolanthaivelu, a former MP of the AIADMK, was found murdered in her home at Besant Nagar, here, on Sunday night and police told TOI they had a launched a hunt for her 35-year-old son Praveen.
The woman, Rathinam, 63, had made a distress call to her daughter Sudha on Sunday night saying her son was trying to murder her, demanding his share of the family property.
Rathinam disconnected the call abruptly even before Sudha could ask her to take asylum in the house of a relative in the city, police said.
Rathinam had been living by herself on Sixth Avenue, Besant Nagar, after the demise of her husband who was the MP from Thiruchengode constituency from 1977 to 1980.
Deceased had called her daughter, spoke about son’s threats
Rathinam disconnected the call abruptly even before Sudha could ask her to take asylum in the house of a relative in the city.
As she could not reach Rathinam again on her mobile phone, Sudha contacted a relative residing at Thoraipakkam in Chennai and requested him to call on her her mother in Besant Nagar.
The man reached Rathinam’s house the same night and found the door locked from outside. There were blood stains on the door, police said.
The relative and some of the neighbours informed police who rushed to the house and found Rathinam dead with her hands and legs tied. Blood was still oozing out of a stab injury on the chest. Police then sent Rathinam’s body to Government Hospital in Royapettah for a postmortem.
Preliminary inquiries revealed that Praveen had studied at a university in London and came to Chennai only last month to meet his mother.
