A team of Income Tax officials and the Election Commission's static surveillance team on Tuesday searched the house of DMK Lok Sabha candidate K Kanimozhi in Thoothukodi in Tamil Nadu, an official said.
Chennai:
Kanimozhi, a Rajya Sabha member, is the DMK candidate from Thoothukudi Lok Sabha constituency contesting against BJP's state unit chief Tamilisai Soundararajan.
On March 30, Income Tax officials had conducted searches at the residence of Kathir Anand's father Durai Murugan over suspected use of unaccounted money for electioneering, and seized Rs. 10.50 lakh in alleged "excess" cash. Two days later, they claimed to have seized Rs 11.53 crore from a cement godown belonging to a DMK leader's associate in the same district.
Following the raid and the showcase of immense money power, the Election Commission had recommended cancellation of polls in Vellore constituency. President Ram Nath Kovind on Tuesday evening rescinded the notification to hold Lok Sabha election to Vellore seat based on this recommendation.
Polling in Thoothukudi is scheduled on April 18.
More details awaited.
