Ganja case: Chennai cop dismissed from service

CHENNAI: A sub-inspector attached to the Marina police station here was dismissed from service on Tuesday following an inquiry into a ganja case.
Chennai city commissioner of police A K Viswanathan issued the order terminating the service of sub-inspector Sundara Vadivelu, 54.

The charge against him was that he hid 30kg of ganja in his house after seizing it during a vehicle check near War Memorial here in 2017 when he was working in the the B3 Fort police station.


He seized 30kg of ganja from a vehicle and demanded bribe from the occupants to release it. But the smugglers didn’t give him bribe. Vadivelu took the contraband to his house without informing his seniors.


When the incident came to light, action was initiated against him. He spent eight months in jail and rejoined for duty in 2018 as a sub-inspector at Marina police station even as the inquiry against him was going on.


A deputy commissioner, a joint commissioner and an additional commissioner inquired the case. Based on the inquiry the report, he was dismissed.
