KOLKATA: An app-cab driver died and his passenger — a 33-year-old senior manager of a pharma company travelling to airport to board an Assam-bound flight — is fighting for life after the vehicle crashed behind a truck on VIP Road at Joramandir around 4.15am on Tuesday.

The driver, 42-year-old Akshay Nayak, died on the spot. The cops took more than one-and-a-half hours to pull his body out of the mangled remains of the Swift Dzire. The passenger, Nazrul Islam, underwent multiple surgeries on his head. According to doctors, his condition was extremely critical till late on Tuesday.

“He has suffered a severe brain haemorrhage and there are multiple clots on one side of the brain. A portion of his skull has also got fractured and has pierced into his brain. Doctors have operated on him but have said that nothing concrete can be said about his state in the next 48 hours,” said Suchismita Majumdar, Islam’s wife. Islam is an institution business manager at an American multinational who was on his way to the airport to take a 5.55am Dibrugarh-bound flight.

Majumdar said Islam had left his home at Brahmapur in Garia around 3.30am. “I called him around 7.30am to check if he had landed safely but a policeman took my call and said my husband had met with an accident and was at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. I came running down from my home with my five-year-old girl at the hospital and found him unconscious and bleeding. Later, I shifted him to the private hospital but by that time, more than six hours had past,” Majumdar told TOI.

According to cops, the accident took place near BIKA cutout and Raghunathpur subway on the airport-bound flank of VIP Road around 4.15am. The front portion of the car got mangled as it crashed into the truck, which was laden with gas cylinders. “It seems like the car was at a very high speed when the accident took place. We had to bring in gas cutters and hacksaws to get the driver out of the car. The passenger had suffered severe head injuries and was transported to the hospital prior to that,” said a senior officer of Bidhannagar commissionerate.

Witnesses said the app cab, which was travelling along the service road, hit the truck as the driver tried to take the main road. The truck wsa trying to veer left and park on the service road.

“Both the vehicles — moving at a fair speed — were trying to change lanes when they collided with each other. Such was the impact that almost the entire front portion of the car, including the driver’s seat, went below the car,” said Akbar Ali, a rickshaw puller who was standing near the BIKA cutout at the time of the accident.

Family members of Nayak said he had taken out the car around 9pm from his house at Karl Marx Sarani in Kidderpore. “He has been driving for the past 12 years and had never met with any major accident. He owns two cars. One of the cars is run by another driver and the car that met with the accident on Tuesday was run by him. Nayak mainly used to work in night shifts and had been an extremely safe driver,” said one of his family members. Nayak is survived by his wife and a 17-year-old son, who got promoted to Class XII on Tuesday.
