THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A family stood out on the Vishu day with their gesture of sacrifice. Family of 48-year-old Kavitha, who was declared brain dead following a fall, gave a new lease of life to three patients by donating her organs.
Kavitha, a native of Kilikolloor in Kollam and home nurse by profession, had a serious head injury after she fell on the bathroom floor.
When she was declared brain dead, officials of state nodal agency Kerala Network for Organ Sharing or Mritasanjeevani talked to Kavitha's daughters Shruthi and Swathi and their relatives about the importance of organ donation. When they agreed, arrangements were made to harvest liver and kidneys. A liver and kidney were transplanted to two patients in a private hospital and one kidney to a patient in Medical college hospital.
KNOS officials said that the courage and kindness shown by Kavitha’s daughters to support a great cause at the time of an adversity was exemplary.
