Manchester United saw their bid for European glory come to an end at the quarter-final stage on Tuesday night as they went down to defeat at Barcelona.

Trailing 1-0 from the first leg, the Red Devils went down to a 3-0 defeat in Spain to tumble out of the Champions League.

Here Samuel Luckhurst runs his eye over the Red Devils showing.

David de Gea

Somehow denied Sergi Roberto but by then had killed the tie with his feeble goalkeeping. His mistake against Lionel Messi was reminiscent of Massimo Taibi. 2

Phil Jones

His blood might still be twisted after the chasing Messi gave him. Did what he could against players who are on a different level. 4

Chris Smalling

Could maybe have got closer to Messi as he shaped to shoot for his first. Did not disgrace himself but worrying for United their team is underpinned by him and Jones. 5

Victor Lindelof

Switched to right-back to accommodate Jones and was not rinsed by Barcelona. Was never going to supplement the attack, either, though. 4

Ashley Young

Showed in front of Avram Glazer how much United need a full-back. Committed about four errors in as many seconds to set Messi on his way. 1

Scott McTominay

Could have levelled the tie in the opening moments but failed to control the ball and never recovered. His energy was futile. 4

Fred

Got skinned by Messi for the first goal that sapped him of momentum after an encouraging start. Could not keep up with the Barcelona carousel. 4

Paul Pogba

Played Rashford through to hit the crossbar inside the first minute but then regressed. Could not muster an audition in Spain for Real Madrid. 3

Jesse Lingard

Vindicated his selection early on amid an intense opening from United but wilted as soon as Barcelona seized control. 4

Anthony Martial

Threatened during United’s period of dominance but then Sergi Roberto had the measure of him and started attacking down United’s flank. 4

Marcus Rashford

Challenged by his manager to make a difference and failed. Squandered two excellent openings at 0-0. Let Barcelona off the hook. 4

Diogo Dalot

Some experience. 5

Romelu Lukaku

Fed off scraps. 4

Alexis Sanchez

Nearly scored. 5
