MUMBAI: In what seems like freak weather, it drizzled in some parts of the city like Malad, Borivli, Bhayander, Jogeshwari and Andheri as well as the neighbouring regions like Thane, Kalyan and Ambernath on Sunday night. In Thane, the drizzle was followed by winds.

Weathermen attributed the activity to "ground heating" over the past two days. On Saturday night, parts of island city like Dadar and Parel received drizzle but India Meteorological Department (IMD)'s observatories did not record anything.

There could be thunders and partly cloudy sky in Mumbai and the neighbouring regions on Monday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD)'s Mumbai observatory has predicted.

Officials said the reason for the drizzle was convection-when air near the Earth's surface heats up, it causes air to expand and rise towards low air pressure area, where it cools down and condenses. "There is abundant moisture in the ground and the recent high temperatures in the city translated into drizzles," said an IMD official.

The maximum temperature, which soared and crossed 36 C on Saturday, dropped on Sunday to hover around 34 C. The maximum temperature recorded by IMD's Santa Cruz observatory on Sunday was 34.5 C, 1.4 C above normal and at the Colaba observatory, it was 33.2 C, which was 0.7 C above normal. The relative humidity recorded by the Colaba and Santa Cruz observatories was 71% and 62% respectively. The minimum temperatures at IMD Colaba and Santa Cruz observatories also remained on the higher side-25.8 C and 24 C respectively.
